SWING WEIGHT - WHAT IS IT AND IS IT IMPORTANT

With the number of Racquets now available it's actually becoming harder to choose! Tennis Mason believes that any racquet over $150 should have a DEMO available. Information like materials used, construction method, strung weight, balance, head size, and stiffnes (RA) are very useful but one of the best methods we now have - thanks to the French compamy Babolat - is Swing Weight.

It's a measure of the weight of the racquet when moving - during the swing. Racquets of the same weight and even the same balance can feel differently when swung. Most of us are familiar with this. We each have our favourite racquet. It may sound funny, but a heavier racquet may even feel better in your hand when swinging than a lighter racquet. That's SWING WEIGHT. And it's why we have demos, because, depending on your style of play, you may well choose a different racquet to a friend - based on the SWING WEIGHT.

In a range of 000 to 999, most racquets measure between 280 (very maneuverable) to 380 (less so). If you love the net you will probably favour the lower measurement. If you like to stay back, you will possibly choose a higher value. It is a good rule of thumb to choose a racquet with as high a Swing Weight as you feel personally comfortable with.

The measurement is an aid in choosing a racquet so please do not view it as a nuisance. And it is another good reason why no-one can tell you what you will like or not like.

Narrow the field - then DEMO to select the perfect weapon for yourself.
